Vijayadashami is one of the most Prominent festival in our Telangana. It is also called as Dasara, Dashahara & Dussehra. Dussehra is celebrated by the Telangana people in various forms. Rama killed Ravana, Durga killed Mahishasura and Pandavas returned from vanavasam. The name Dashahara is derived as Dasha mean Sun and hara mean defeat. Totally Sun will not rise due to the Victory of Rama over the ten headed demon king Ravana and Victory of Durga Mata over Mahishasura.

According to our Hindu calendar Dussehra is celebrated in the month of September and October. Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day and before nine days were celebrated as Maha Navaratri. Goddess fought with evils for 9 nights and 10 days. Returning Sri Rama, Sita and Laxmana to Ayodya after the completion of 20 days from Dussehra. So the residents in Ayodya lit their village with lamps. Since this day is celebrated as Deepavali or Diwali.

On the day of Dussehra Pandavas hid their weapons in a hole on Jammi tree before Agnyatavas. After the completion of Agnyatavas, they have recovered their weapons changed to their original identities and defeated Kauravas. Since that day Jammu trees has been worshipped. On this day Ayudha pooja (Prayer to Weapons) is performed. Some households display Bommala Koluvu that mean arrangement of toys and dolls.

Final day of Navaratri, Goddess is taken out in procession and immersed in a lake, river or well. According to Scriptures, by worshipping the ‘Shakti’ on these nine days the householders attain the threefold power i.e. physical, mental and spiritual, which helps them to progress in life without any difficulty. We will celebrate Dussehra by visiting temple on evening of that day. On this occasion women and children wear new clothes, visiting friends and taking blessings of their relatives.
