Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar, Gujarat. Gandhiji was born in middle class family. His father, Karamchand Gandhi was a Diwan (Prime Minister) of Porbandar. His mother, Putlibai was Karamchand’s Fourth wife. The first three wives’s were died during their childbirth’s. In May 1883, Gandhi was married Kasturbai according to arranged marriage. Due to his marriage he lost one year school and at that age once he said that we don’t know what marriage is? We know only that, wearing of new clothes, meeting with relatives, enjoyment. In 1885 Gandhi’s first child was born. He is having four children. They were Harilal, Manilal, Ramdas and Devdas.

Gandhi’s life was turned in South Africa. His name was transformed from Mohandas to Mahatma. During his stay in South Africa, Gandhiji’s life underwent a change and he was developed most of his political ideas. Gandhi decided to dedicate himself completely to serve humanity. During struggle in South Africa, Gandhi developed the concept of Ahimsa (Non – Violence) and Satyagraha. In 1921, Gandhi gave the call for freedom movement against the ills of British rule from 1915 - 1947 Mahatma Gandhi laid an important role in the freedom struggle and he is known as Father of Nation. His Birthday 2^nd October is declared as Gandhi Jayanti (National Holiday) and world-wide as the International day of Non Violence.
